More than a Job: The Vocation of Teaching

One of the things that I’ve discovered being a teacher at the major of Pedagogy of National and Foreign Languages at UDA, is that every day, I feel grateful and confident that I do what truly fulfills me both, professionally and personally. When discussing vocations, having a calling is without a doubt one of the most significant emotions. What we do for life, determines whether we are "working" for the sake of love and happiness or merely to make ends meet.

Indeed, in some professions, such as teaching, this call is a must, because teachers are not only with students to impart content, but most of the time we leave a lasting impression in their lives. Who doesn’t recall the teacher who made us fall in love with a subject? or the teacher who encourages and motivates us after a disappointment or problem we might’ve encountered? There is also the teacher who made us believe that we could be anything we want, or the one who, spotting the sadness in our eyes, cared to ask us if we were all right before continuing with the lesson.

Being a professor in the major, gives me the chance  to pass on this passion to my students, so they understand that teaching is more altruistic than other professions, because we not only share our knowledge, but we inspire and guide leaving an important mark on our students’ hearts and souls. Despite all the challenges that come with the job, each day it is an opportunity to learn, grow, and make a difference in the future of those who trust us.
