Exploring new technological approaches to teaching has become a game-changing movement for innovative educators. Classrooms have been transformed into interactive, dynamic training fields that promote student-centered learning. So, how fully are we, as educators, reshaping our teaching role in embracing this unstoppable change?
Have you become familiar with any of these interesting new approaches? Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is developed in collaborative environments using apps, platforms, or AI tools. Technology-Mediated Task-Based Learning (TBLT) involves the use of videos, chats, or forums. E.g., when you ask your student to record a podcast about the benefits of recycling in the university. Gamification & Mobile Learning, you can increase your students’ motivation using Kahoot, Quizziz, etc. (González-Lloret & Ortega, 2014; Chapelle, 2001)
Who are our learners today? Marc Prensky (2001) describes them as digital natives—students who have grown up surrounded by technology. As a result, elements like multimedia, collaboration, and real-time feedback are now essential in our teaching. Tools like Socrative help break predictable routines and promote more engaging learning experiences in which students actively interact and learn in meaningful ways.
Where does critical thinking fit in digital language teaching? As teachers, we must design purposeful activities that promote analysis, evaluation, and reflection (Paul & Elder, 2008; Warschauer, 1997). Beyond language practice, students develop decision-making skills and learn to evaluate different perspectives, preparing them to face real-life challenges by effectively using digital tools.
In the end, our real challenge is not only to apply new digital approaches but also to use them to transform our classrooms into inspiring spaces for our active and demanding learners, equipping them with critical thinking and enabling them to develop in real-life situations that go beyond a learning routine.
